The rules regarding a character drinking a potion, or administering it to another character, were kind of buried in the 2014 Dungeon Masters Gudie (DMG14) in a chapter 7 subsection on magic items (p. 139). This general rule made potion use an Action.
Similarly, the DMG24 also states this rule in Chapter 7: Treasure [p. 216], but adjusts the use/application time to a Bonus Action.
While this has been a common (nearly ubiquitous) house rule, the official change in the 2024 rules is welcome and overdue.
My complaint with this statement of rule is that it’s tucked neatly away in a completely unrelated part of the entirely wrong book. This is mechanical information about how the game is played, as such it properly belongs in the PHB section - preferably in the section that describes the action economy [page number needed] so that “consuming a potion” doesn’t get confused with the “Utilize” action. Better yet, put that rule in both places.
